One Pole, Four Current Ratings

Unipolar connectors solve a specific problem: when the positive and negative leads are routed separately, a single-pole plug per cable is simpler than forcing both through one body. The SP series covers 15/45A, 75A, 120A and 180A at 600V, with a PC110U shell and T2 silver-plated terminal, UL, ROHS and CE approved.

Choosing Within the Series

The four ratings exist so the connector matches the cable rather than the catalogue. A 15/45A body on a light auxiliary lead should not be the same part as a 180A body on a traction cable: the contact mass and the housing differ, and so does the crimp tooling.

Picking by current first and cable second is the sequence that avoids both overheating and over-specifying.

Why Single-Pole Suits Certain Layouts

Where a battery box routes positive and negative on opposite sides, or where a lead has to pass through a bulkhead one cable at a time, a unipolar plug is easier to install and easier to replace. It also allows a cable to be shortened or re-terminated without disturbing the other pole.

The trade-off is that polarity is no longer fixed by the housing, so marking and discipline matter more than with a bipolar body.

Colour Coding and Spares

Standard colour is supplied as listed, with customised colours available on request. On unipolar systems, colour is often the only visual cue distinguishing the two leads, which makes it worth specifying deliberately rather than accepting whatever arrives.

Cable Range and Crimping

Each rating in the SP series corresponds to a cable range, and the terminal is sized for it. Crimping a 180A body onto a light cable adds cost without benefit; crimping a 45A body onto a traction lead makes the connector the hottest point in the circuit.

Use the die matched to the terminal, pull-test every joint, and keep the cable entry free of strain once the plug is mounted.

When a Unipolar Plug Is the Wrong Choice

Where a driver swaps batteries several times a shift, a bipolar body is safer: polarity is fixed by the housing and both leads are handled as one. Unipolar connectors suit routed, fixed installations and maintenance work better than daily driver handling.

Four Ratings in One Bin

Because the shells share a family appearance, a workshop can hold all four ratings without confusion: the size difference is visible, and the colour scheme can be used to keep them separable. That is a practical advantage over mixing brands, where two connectors of similar rating may not share tooling or terminals.

What the Ratings Do Not Tell You

The current figure is only half the choice. Cable range, terminal size and the mating body must match the application, and a connector rated well above the load can still be wrong if its terminal does not suit the cable on the machine.
