Product Description
This is the charger a battery room keeps when it has to run every day for a decade. The CZB5C-D72V/100A is a line-frequency SCR charger built around a mains transformer rather than a switching board. It puts up to 100A into a 72V traction pack, across 36 lead-acid cells, on a tapered Wa characteristic, and it does so with a power path a plant electrician can trace with a multimeter.
Where a high-frequency charger wins on size, weight and efficiency, a transformer charger wins on what happens in year six: a mains transient, a dusty charging bay, a 45 C afternoon, and a maintenance team with no board-level repair bench. There is nothing in the power path finer than a thyristor, a copper winding and a set of fuses, and all three are available in-country in most export markets.
SCR stands for Silicon Controlled Rectifier. It is a four-layer PNPN thyristor: it blocks current in both directions until a gate pulse releases it, and once conducting it stays on until the current through it falls to zero at the end of a mains half-cycle. That single behaviour is the whole charger.
The sequence inside the cabinet is short enough to describe in one sentence: three-phase 380V enters a 50Hz transformer that steps it down to a voltage suited to a 36-cell pack; a thyristor bridge then rectifies it; and the control board delays the gate pulse within each half-cycle, so the further the pulse is delayed, the less of the waveform reaches the battery, and the lower the charging current. Current is therefore set by firing angle rather than by a switching frequency. That is why this family is called a line-frequency or industrial-frequency charger, and why it has no high-frequency switching noise to filter, no fast diodes to protect and no firmware profile that can be corrupted.
Two practical consequences follow. First, the current is limited by the transformer and the thyristor rating, so the output is a genuinely smooth DC with the ripple tied to 50Hz mains rather than to a 20-100kHz carrier. Second, a charger built this way tolerates a sagging supply: it rides through the dips that a switching charger reads as an input fault and trips on.
- It survives the supply. Panel plants, ports and foundries have voltage dips and phase imbalance. A transformer and thyristor bridge do not care about the shape of the waveform the way an active front end does.
- It is repaired in-house. Thyristors, contactors, fuses, fans and control relays are catalogue parts. No air-freighted control board, no firmware reflash, no proprietary diagnostic tool.
- It is forgiving of heat. There is no dense electronics stack sitting on top of the heat source. The transformer is the heat source, and it is cooled by the same fan that has been in the design for twenty years.
- It can be re-tapped. Change the truck, change the tap. A pack of a different capacity or voltage can be accommodated on site without replacing the charger.
- It gives decades of service. Winding insulation and a fan motor are the wear items, and both are replaceable. The units still in service from the 1990s are almost all transformer machines.
- The trade-off is honest. More weight, more footprint, and a few points less efficiency than a switching design. For a fixed charging bay, that trade is usually worth taking.

The output current is the whole argument. On a 72V 600Ah pack, 100A is 0.167C, which sits squarely inside the 0.1-0.2C band flooded traction cells are designed for. Nothing is being rushed, and the taper stage still brings the finish in gently.
The arithmetic a buyer does: a pack taken down to 20% state of charge has roughly 528Ah to put back once the overcharge factor is allowed for. At 100A that is about five and a half hours of bulk and taper, seven to eight hours including the equalising finish. One shift out, one shift back in, with the truck available at the start of the next shift rather than part-way through it.
Sizing above the minimum is deliberate. A charger that finishes with time in hand lets a second truck use the same bay, and lets a pack be charged from a deeper discharge on a busy day without the finish stage being skipped to make up time. In the CZB5C range the 100A cabinet is rated for 580-800Ah packs, so a 600Ah pack sits towards the lower end of its window: the same charger will still serve the fleet after the packs are upsized, which is exactly what a plant buying for ten years wants.
Because current is set by transformer taps and firing angle rather than by a firmware profile, the same cabinet can be re-tapped for a different pack on site. Operators running a mixed fleet value that more than they expect to.
- The truck is brought to the bay, key switch off, and the battery connector made. Reverse connection is detected before the contactor closes, and an alarm is raised instead of a short circuit.
- The unit runs its automatic detection, applies the delayed start, then soft-starts into the pack. Nothing slams 100A into a cold pack on the first half-cycle.
- Current holds at the set value while voltage climbs through the gassing level. The double closed loop tracks the pack and adjusts the parameters as it goes.
- Current tapers along the Wa curve, which is simply the standard designation for a taper charge: current falls as the pack reaches gassing voltage. Temperature compensation shifts the gassing point voltage with ambient, so a hot afternoon does not gas the pack harder than a cold morning.
- The equalising stage holds the finish for its set period, bringing the cells back to a common specific gravity, then the contactor opens.
- The finish data is written to memory, one of the last 30 recharges that a technician can read back when a pack starts to behave badly.
The same cabinet family covers 24V to 80V packs. E series models take single or two-phase input, D series models take three-phase input. The row in bold below is this product; the table is here so a buyer can see where the 100A unit sits before ordering, and re-order the same family for a different truck.

Battery capacity is quoted at the 8.5h discharge rate. Special specifications are tailor designed on request: other voltages, other currents, single-phase input and OEM labelling are all available. CZB5C-D72/100 is a derived 72V build of the 100A cabinet; its power rating and input current are confirmed against the nameplate of each built unit.
CZB5C-D72V/100A, shipped to a particle board plant in Indonesia.
The unit went to a particle board manufacturing plant in Kendal, Central Java, where it charges 72V 600Ah packs on a fleet of Sumitomo electric forklifts. 100A was the customer's own specification: they wanted the pack back in service faster than a 60A or 80A unit allows, and 100A on a 600Ah pack still sits at 0.167C, inside the band the cells are designed for.
The site itself is the standard duty for this class of charger: a three-phase 380V/50Hz supply in a working plant, and an industrial charging bay. That is the condition a transformer and thyristor bridge are built for, where a switching charger is the more delicate of the two, and where the power path can be kept running with parts held locally instead of a control board shipped in from abroad.
At 526 x 360 x 882 mm and 95 kg the cabinet stands in a corner of the bay without blocking an aisle, and the 30-recharge memory gives the maintenance team a record to read back when a pack starts to come back shallow. The order shipped EXW, packed in a plywood case with a moisture barrier and collected by the customer's own express forwarder.
- Supply. A dedicated three-phase feed with an isolation and protection device rated for the input current in the table above. Phase loss is detected and alarmed, but a correct supply is still the first requirement.
- Cable. The DC run to the truck should be short and correctly sized. 100A through an undersized cable turns into heat in the wrong place, and the taper stage reads a false voltage at the pack terminals.
- Air. Free air on the fan side of the cabinet, and ventilation for the pack itself. Charging a flooded pack in a sealed room is a hydrogen question, not a charger question.
- Position. Floor-standing, level, away from direct water spray. Castors are available where the bay is shared between positions.
- Connector. Tell us the plug you standardise on. DIN 160A, Anderson and fixed bolt terminations are all supplied, and the cable is made off to match before dispatch.
- Weekly: confirm the fan runs and the intake is not blanketed in dust. Overheat faults in tropical bays are almost always airflow, not electronics.
- Monthly: check the finish voltage against the pack's specification and read back the last recharges from memory if packs are returning shallow.
- Per pack service: run the equalising charge as scheduled, and use the desulphation function on packs that have been left standing or deeply discharged.
- Spares to hold: thyristors, fuses, a fan and a contactor. That is the whole wear list, and it fits in a shoebox.
What does SCR mean? Silicon Controlled Rectifier, a thyristor. The charger steps the mains down through a transformer and controls charging current by delaying the thyristor firing angle in each half-cycle. No high-frequency switching stage is involved.
Is 100A too much for a 600Ah pack? No. It is 0.167C, inside the normal traction band, and the 100A cabinet is rated for 580-800Ah packs.
Why not a high-frequency charger? Smaller and lighter, but a denser electronics stack in a hot bay and repair by board replacement. Where the bay is fixed and the maintenance team is on site, the transformer machine is usually the cheaper decision over ten years.
Can it charge a smaller or larger pack? Yes, with a reduced current setting or a different tap. Give us the capacity and the unit is configured at build.
Does it need a special supply? Three-phase 380V/50Hz as standard for the D series. Single and two-phase input versions exist in the E series for lower currents.
What about certification? CE and ISO9001 as standard. Tell us the destination market and we will confirm what additional documentation the shipment needs.
The charger is packed in a plywood case with a moisture barrier, fumigation free, and can be shipped EXW, FOB or CIF as required. Because the cabinet is 526 x 360 x 882 mm and 95 kg, it is routinely moved by express freight for single-unit orders and by sea for fleet orders.
To quote accurately, send four lines: pack voltage and cell count, capacity in Ah, the number of trucks charged per day, and the connector type you standardise on. Standard lead time is 15 days from order confirmation and deposit. Write to us with the site conditions, and we will quote the correct tap setting rather than the nearest catalogue item.
