SC350: The Connector Behind a 2/0 Cable

A 350A connector is not a bigger version of a 175A one. It is the point in the range where the cable itself becomes heavy, the lugs are crimped with a hydraulic tool, and the connector has to carry current that will find any weak joint. Everything about the SC350 follows from that: the housing material, the plating on the contact, and the fact that it is supplied as a set with a matched handle and cover.

Ratings, Stated Once

The connector is rated 350A continuous at 600V, to UL1977, with IP20 protection and an operating range of -20℃ to +105℃. Withstand voltage is 2500V DC. Colour is either the standard icon colour or to customer requirement.

Those figures are worth reading together rather than as a list. IP20 says the housing protects against fingers and solid objects, not water — it is a connector for a battery compartment, not a wash-down area. The 105℃ upper limit matters because a 350A joint that has started to heat is exactly the condition that finds the limit of the housing material.

The Cable This Connector Is Built For

Terminals are sized for 2/0 AWG, 3/0 AWG, 4/0 AWG and 300 AWG cable. That bandwidth is the whole point of the model: a 350A connector that only accepted one cable size would be a connector for one truck, whereas this one covers the range of heavy leads used across counterbalance fleets and larger traction packs.

Termination is by crimp with the correct die for the size. A 4/0 lug crimped with a 3/0 die will pull-test acceptably and still run warm, because the contact area is smaller than the current requires. On a connector at this rating the crimp is not a detail — it is the joint.

Contact Plating and What It Buys

Terminals are T2 copper with silver plating. Silver is chosen for contact resistance and for stability under heat: it does not form the resistive oxide layer that bare copper develops, so a joint that is made and re-made keeps the same resistance instead of climbing with each cycle.

The plating is thin and it is not armour. Abrasive cleaning of a contact face removes it; a contact that has been scrubbed bright with emery cloth has had its plating taken off along with the dirt. Wipe, do not grind.

The Housing

The shell is PC110U polycarbonate, selected for impact strength at low temperature as much as for insulation. A battery connector is dropped, kicked, and knocked against tray edges; the failure that matters is a crack at the mounting ear or at the latch, because a cracked shell is a path for moisture to reach the contact.

Finger-safe IP20 construction means the live parts are not accessible when the connector is unmated. On a 600V system that is not a convenience feature.

Supplied as a Set

The connector ships as a kit with a matched handle and cover rather than as a bare shell. That matters at the point of fitting: the handle is the part an operator pulls, and a mismatched handle is what makes a connector feel loose even when the contacts are correct. A set removes the mixing of parts from different batches.

Fitting Sequence for a Heavy Lead

1. Cut the cable square and strip to the length marked on the lug, not by eye.

2. Crimp with the die matched to the cable size, one full stroke, no partial closures.

3. Pull-test before the housing goes on. If it moves, the joint is wrong and no amount of torque will fix it.

4. Fit the contact into the shell until it clicks, then tug it back to confirm the retention.

5. Close the housing and fit the cover, then check the cable entry for strain with the connector hanging free.

In Service

Check the contact face for discoloration at each battery service, and compare temperature across the pack after a charge. A 350A connector that is warmer than its neighbours is reporting either a crimp that has relaxed or a contact that has been contaminated; both are cheaper to fix at that point than after a meltdown.

A fleet that uses one connector family across its trucks keeps one crimping die, one spare set and one set of habits. Mixing ratings across machines is where the wrong connector ends up on the wrong cable — a 175A shell on a 2/0 lead is a connection that will run hot from the first shift.

Housings and contacts are inspected against the drawing before assembly, and each batch is checked for the dimensional features that decide fit: latch travel, contact retention and cable entry. Where a site needs documentation for an audit, request it with the order.

Storage and Handling

Store mated or with the cover fitted. An unmated connector left on a bench collects dust on the contact face, and dust between silver-plated contacts is a resistance path that appears months later as a warm joint. The cover supplied with the set exists for that reason rather than for shipping.

A Connector Is a Maintenance Item

Treat it as one. A connector that is checked at the same interval as the battery is a connector that gets replaced before it strands a truck, and at this rating the check is visual: face, latch, cable entry, temperature.
