AWS-18 in Two Places: Golf Car and RV House Bank

Both cases share the same problem: the pack is out of sight for most of its life, and the cells that dry out are the ones at the back. A float valve in every head means the back cells fill to the same level as the front ones, whether or not anyone can reach them.

The Components and What Each Does

Watering plug with float: replaces the vent cap and closes at level. T-piece and L-piece: join heads and turn corners, rotating so the run follows the pack. Flow indicator: shows water moving and carries the filter. Composite connectors and 6mm / 8mm / 10mm pipe: the lines themselves, one for watering, one for supply. End plugs: close the run so it pressurises. Male and female couplings K10 / KV6: connect the tank without tools.

Operating It Correctly

Connect the tank, let it run, disconnect when the indicator stops. The plugs are not removed for watering and there is no cell-by-cell check to perform; the lens on each head is there for confirmation, not for routine use. Tilting the top cover opens the cell for a temperature reading when a pack is commissioned or suspected of running hot.

Leak Tightness

The system has been in service long enough for its sealing to be judged on results: push-fit joints with their own seals, a closed run, and couplings designed as a connection rather than a push-on. A joint that seeps shows within days of filling, which makes the failure self-reporting rather than silent.

Fitting Notes for an Inaccessible Pack

Where the bank is hard to reach, fit the heads before the batteries are installed if there is any choice about the order. Route the supply line to a point that stays accessible when the vehicle is loaded, and keep the tank coupling reachable from outside the compartment — the system is only convenient if the connection is.

Questions

Will it fit six 6V batteries? If the pack is eighteen cells and the caps match, yes — that is the configuration AWS-18 is built for.

Can one tank serve two packs? Yes, the coupling is made to be disconnected and reconnected; the tank is not tied to a single battery.

Is the whole range the same construction? Yes — AWS-12 to AWS-40 differ in head count, pipe length and tank size, not in how they work.

Where the Time Goes on an RV Bank

An RV house bank is usually under a bed or behind a step, and the caps are reached one at a time by hand. Twelve to eighteen cells in that position is a job that gets postponed, and a postponed watering on a lead acid bank is what shortens its life. The difference the kit makes is not speed on the day — it is that the job stops being unpleasant enough to avoid.

There is a second advantage specific to vehicles: a bank that sits for weeks between trips. Cells lose water while idle, and a pack that was level at the end of the season is not level at the start of the next one. A single connection at the beginning of a trip restores the whole bank to level before anything is loaded on top of it.

What to Check on the Caps

The watering plug replaces the vent cap, so the cap pattern is the detail that decides fit. Bayonet, thread and push-in patterns all exist in this battery class, and a photograph of one cap is worth more than a description. Sending it before the order avoids the only failure that cannot be fixed at the point of fitting.

Water Quality

Use distilled or deionised water. The system controls the level, not the chemistry: minerals introduced with tap water stay in the cells and accumulate over a season. A float valve keeps the level right; only the water keeps the electrolyte right.
