1. It began with a price, not a policy
The revolution did not start on a factory floor; it started on a price chart. In the blog “What triggered the battery revolution”, Eneroc USA’s Max Khabur argued that the collapse in LFP cell prices turned lithium from a premium upgrade into the most cost-effective choice in materials handling. When the economics changed, the buyers changed with them.
2. The big trucks went electric
The clearest proof is capacity: electrification used to stop where heavy lifting began. In 2026 it kept going.
- HELI launched G3 Series 12–18T lithium-ion forklifts for ports, rail yards and mining, and won an iF Design Award for a 55T electric concept it calls “the world’s largest electric forklift”.
- Noblelift USA unveiled a 10T FE4P220N with a 96V battery refilled in 2–2.5 hours, plus a 7,000 lb Alpha in lithium-ion and LPG.
- Manitou released ten lithium-ion semi-industrial and rough-terrain forklifts with a 3 kW on-board charger on a 220V socket.
- Hyster added the E45-70XN2 and brought its XTLG series to the Americas, using ~75% less energy than diesel.
3. Behind the trucks, a supply chain scaled up
- HM Battery Solutions, the Hangcha–Manitou joint venture, opened its first lithium-ion battery plant in Le Mans, France.
- ROYPOW added a 1 GWh PACK line, pushing annual capacity past 8 GWh.
- Yale launched integrated LFP batteries with modular packs, and Electrovaya signed a deal with Amazon to roll out its Infinity battery.
4. And then a surprise: sodium-ion
Just as lithium-ion tightened its grip, a rival chemistry stepped into the test yard. Jungheinrich began real-world sodium-ion trials at customer sites, while FAW Jiefang and HiNa Battery reported sodium-ion packs holding over 90% usable capacity after long-term tests down to –40°C.
5. Ports and the biggest machines followed
Electrification left the warehouse behind: LiuGong delivered an electric reach stacker to Tanzania, Khalifa bin Salman Port in Bahrain adopted a 507 kWh reach stacker (10–12 hours per charge), and YILPORT ordered 53 e-hybrid RTG cranes.
6. Safety kept pace
Forkliftaction’s June coverage marked National Forklift Safety Day in the UK and US around four themes: the human element, technician safety (85% of injuries occur on customers’ premises), hazard perception and psychosocial risk.
